The Process:
Goal Setting: Let’s get started. The big ideas for the project are verbalized and documented in brainstorming sessions with the client in this critical first step. Together, we will define the overall expectations about the function, features, schedule, and budget of the design. Carefully documenting and revisiting the project goals at each step of the process assures that the team is aligned at the completion of the project.
Conceptual Design: This is the fun part! With goals in hand, I will explore the the project’s potential with sketches and diagrams of the site. As the best ideas emerge, they will be developed into alternative conceptual plans. Typically, conceptual design will also include imagery and examples of potential plants, paving and wall materials, furniture, and fencing. Ideally a contractor will be included on the team during this phase to assist with budget decisions. Selecting a contractor is vital to the success of experience and I can assist in matching a contractor’s expertise to the needs of the project.
Design Development: After reviewing the conceptual plans with the client, elements of the plans and materials are refined at this step to develop a final concept. The final concept is drafted and reviewed in the context of the project goals. Once the final concept is approved by the client, construction documentation can begin.
Construction Documentation: Construction documentation serves as the basis of a legal agreement between the client and contractor. The documents include the plan with dimensions, quantities of the materials, and the design details to be used in the construction of the plan. Construction details provide specific materials, dimensions, and relationships between materials to guide the contractor during construction. Contractors will use the documents to determine the final cost of the project for the clients approval before construction begins.
Construction Observation: During construction, I will meet regularly with the contractor and client to ensure that the project is moving on schedule and according to plan. Other services will include reviewing materials, assisting with problem solving when unexpected circumstances arise, and providing a final review at the conclusion of construction.
Guiding Principles:
Creativity and Innovation: Each site and client offer different design challenges and lifestyle goals. Distinctive and successful results demand creative and innovative solutions. Large or small, I will provide the same high standard of design to your project.
Consciousness: We can have a profound impact on the environment in the design of our homes and landscapes. I will always advocate for low-water use and the use local materials to reduce the environmental impact your project. Verdant will donate at least 1% of its profits to local non-profit organizations that support the local environment and community.
Collaboration: I place a high value on the ideas and experience of the client, other designers, and builders. Project success relies on cultivating an environment where all parties feel they are valuable contributors.
Transparency: A designer’s most important role is to synthesize information and deliver it clearly and honestly so that the client can make the best decisions to achieve their goals.
